Guala Closures has inaugurated a new production facility in Gartcosh, Scotland, following an investment of more than €60m ($69m).

The facility covers approximately 20,000m² and is anticipated to create more than 300 skilled jobs, thereby enhancing Guala Closures’ industrial footprint in the UK and benefiting the local economy.

Positioned in Scotland’s whisky-producing area, the site is set to cater to both large global brands and smaller producers.

Currently, over 100 distilleries are being supplied from this facility, further embedding Guala Closures within the domestic whisky sector, which generated nearly €7.9bn in total value in 2024, including €6.2bn in exports.

This investment includes a grant exceeding €3.5m from Scottish Enterprise, indicating the project’s importance on both national and international scales.

The new facility incorporates advanced manufacturing technologies such as Electro Magnetic Forming, a process developed and patented by Guala Closures, along with flexible automation and robotic systems.

These technologies facilitate the production of distinctive features, including tamper-evident seals, which enhance product safety and efficiency in bottling.

Sustainability has been a key consideration in the project.

The facility is equipped with 2.4MW of solar panels, along with advanced insulation and airtightness to improve energy efficiency.

Additionally, a siphonic drainage system with sustainable urban drainage and attenuation tanks has been installed to manage water responsibly.

The internal design of the plant aims to reduce material movement and forklift traffic while energy-efficient LED lighting, complete with motion sensors and timers, is utilised throughout the site.

Alongside manufacturing, the Gartcosh facility includes a dedicated research and development (R&D) hub focused on high-end closures.

With 37 production sites and seven R&D centres globally, Guala Closures’ latest facility enhances its international industrial presence.

Guala Closures CEO Andrea Lodetti said: “With this investment, we are strengthening our roots in a region that is globally iconic, reinforcing our commitment to the Scotch whisky industry, and setting a new benchmark in sustainable, high-performance packaging.

“The facility is designed for maximum efficiency and scalability, allowing us to optimise operations and create tangible value, both for our customers and for our business.”

Last December, Guala Closures acquired the remaining 30% stake in Guala Closures Bulgaria.
