Gerresheimer has begun operations at a newly built facility in Zhenjiang Dagang, China, focused on manufacturing glass primary packaging for the pharmaceutical sector.
Spanning approximately 40,000m², the plant has been completed in the Zhenjiang Economic Development Zone in Jiangsu Province following four years of construction.

According to the company, a further 33,000m² of land at the site has been set aside for possible future development.
With the opening of the new site, Gerresheimer’s production capacity in China for primary packaging used in injectable medicines has doubled.
The facility is currently producing pharmaceutical vials and ampoules, mainly for the domestic Chinese market, and employs around 250 people.
The company said 50 additional roles are expected to be added over the next few years.
The opening of the Zhenjiang Dagang site also coincides with the 20-year partnership between Gerresheimer and Chinese company Shuangfeng Glass.
Through their joint venture, Gerresheimer Shuangfeng Pharmaceutical Glass, the two companies now run four Tubular Glass plants in China.
These include two facilities in Danyang, one in Zhenjiang and the newly opened site in Zhenjiang Dagang.
Gerresheimer said the new plant is fitted with “state-of-the-art” glass forming lines, along with automated production and logistics systems.
The site manufactures borosilicate glass vials and ampoules in multiple sizes and formats, in line with China’s good manufacturing practices for pharmaceutical packaging.
