US packaging company Sealed Air has expanded its operations by opening a new customer engagement facility, Packforum EMEA, in Passirana di Rho, Milan, Italy.

Packforum EMEA allows guests to discover new packaging solutions, as well as share new ideas about the global market and consumer trends.

According to the company, the facility is built and furnished using repurposed materials and uses sustainable energy sources to help reduce operational waste.

The facility features global innovation and development centres, and is aimed at attracting packaging and e-commerce companies across the region.

Customers visiting the facility can generate ideas, create and test food and product packaging solutions in a virtual supermarket environment. The site also features a smart kitchen to demonstrate products and a manufacturing plant.

The facility will house experts across various fields, including the circular economy, food science, food law compliance, e-commerce fulfilment, and packaging automation to support customers.

Sealed Air corporate innovation and sustainability vice-president Dr Ron Cotterman said: “Eliminating waste from our operations and helping our customers eliminate waste throughout the supply chain not only improves the efficiency and profitability of their operations, but also significantly benefits our communities and environment.

The company also operates customer engagement facilities in Shanghai, China, and at its global corporate headquarters in the US.

Last month, the US packaging company partnered with Kuraray America for a project to manufacture plant-based food packaging.
