The investment forms part of the firm’s larger multi-billion dollar investment strategy, through which it aims to strengthen its recyclable metal packaging capacity in North America, Europe and Brazil.

AMP has not specified the number of jobs to be created at the facility, but the investment is expected to generate several full-time positions, including engineers and technicians.

The company is engaging with stakeholders in the region for the project, which is currently in the pre-planning application stage.

Further details are expected to be announced in the coming months.

AMP CEO Oliver Graham said: “This exciting project is an important part of AMP’s global investment programme.

“We are delighted to be investing in Northern Ireland supporting our clients’ sustainability needs and further reducing our carbon footprint by locating capacity closer to our end customers.”

AMP Europe CEO David Spratt said: “We plan to have the new state of the art plant operational during 2023 and we expect to commence recruitment in 2022.

“This investment is supported by key AMP customers and will have capacity for further expansion to service additional growth in customer demand.”

Earlier this month, AMP announced the acquisition of Canadian digital printing company Hart Print for an undisclosed amount.

Hart Print’s technology is designed to provide high-speed digital printing for a range of can dimensions.

AMP operates 23 production facilities across nine countries. It employs more than 5,000 people, with sales amounting to around $3.5bn last year.

The company is 75% owned by international packaging group Ardagh Group.
