Sustainable aluminium packaging solution provider Ball, and recycler and supplier Novelis, have increased the recycled content rate in the Ball Aluminium Cup.

The lightweight aluminium cups designed by Ball are now composed of 90% recycled content.

Increasing the recycled content in the cup significantly reduces its carbon footprint, and using recycled aluminium consumes 95% less energy, compared to using primary aluminium.

Produced in Rome, Georgia, the aluminium cup is already in use by Ball customers.

In addition to increasing the recycled content, Ball also recently received Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze for the aluminium cup.

Ball Corporation president and CEO Dan Fisher said: “At Ball, we’re committed to innovative solutions that contribute to creating a truly circular economy.

“Aluminium beverage packaging, including the Ball Aluminium Cup, has always been a sustainable alternative to plastic, and this update only further strengthens its sustainability attributes.

“We aim to deliver solutions that not only benefit our global customers but also benefit the planet, and we are excited to partner with Novelis to bring a Ball Aluminium Cup made with 90% recycled content to communities everywhere.”

The aluminium cup was developed to improve beverage packaging circularity in sports and entertainment venues.

The cup is being used at Ball Arena, in Denver; SoFi Stadium, in Los Angeles; Hard Rock Stadium, in Miami; State Farm Arena, in Atlanta; Lucas Oil Stadium, in Indianapolis; and Climate Pledge Arena, in Seattle.

The beverage packaging has already eliminated more than 350,000 single-use plastic cups and bottles at Ball Arena.

Last month, Ball started building a can manufacturing facility at the SEGRO Park Kettering Gateway in Kettering, UK.
