Paper and packaging company Mondi has launched fully recyclable paper packaging for Italian pasta brand Antico Pastificio Umbro in collaboration with Fiorini International.
The packaging is made from renewable resources and is designed to offer similar protective properties to the brand’s previous plastic packaging.
It features a new closure system sealed with a special food contact hot-melt glue, as well as a reinforced patch on the bottom to ensure easy opening without compromising hygiene.
In addition, the packaging comes with a large window made from transparent, recyclable and biodegradable cellulose to allow customers to see the contents.
The new pasta bag is intended to provide improved printability quality for brand and product messages, as well as good runnability on filling machines.
It can be disposed of in existing paper waste streams.

By GlobalDataOnce introduced across the full pasta range, the packaging will help Fiorini International remove up to 20t of plastic every year.
Mondi South & America region kraft paper sales head Massimiliano Scottà said: “We used our customer-centric EcoSolutions approach to develop this recyclable packaging and worked very closely with Fiorini International and Antico Pastificio Umbro.
“In addition, we are delighted to have been part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and London Design Museum’s Upstream Innovation installation, which is about rethinking packaging and developing solutions that are sustainable by design.
“This means focusing on the purpose while optimising the material and even changing it completely if necessary, as with this new paper bag for pasta.”
The packaging solution will contribute to Mondi’s MAP2030 sustainability target to make all its products reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.
Last month, the company developed a range of ‘fit-for-purpose’ packaging solutions for the fresh produce market.
