China-based investment holding company Baguio Green Group has added a fully automated plastic sorting facility to its recycling plant in Hong Kong.
The high-speed facility is enhanced by near-infrared (NIR) technology and is designed to allow all plastic types and colours to be separated rapidly.

Once fully operational, the sorting facility will have the capacity to process more than 10,000tpa of plastic.
In addition to increasing processing capacity, it will improve Baguio’s plastic sorting capability to accurately segregate the collected plastic recyclables into various kinds for quality conversion.
The company said that the addition to its recycling capability will help it gain a competitive edge and consolidate its position in Hong Kong’s recycling segment.

Hong Kong aims to become ‘zero landfill’ by 2035 by following the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government’s Waste Blueprint for Hong Kong 2035.
Discarded plastic currently accounts for more than 20% of the waste being sent to landfills.
In support of this initiative, Baguio has been contracted to manage three-colour recycling bins at more than 2,800 collection points by the HKSAR government’s Environmental Protection Department (EPD).
These collection points are located across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories.
Earlier this month, Baguio secured a 33-month EPD Plastic Recycling Pilot Scheme contract to provide plastic collection services for Hong Kong’s Eastern, Kwun Tong and Central & Western districts.
In July last year, the EPD launched a two-month public consultation on the Scheme on Regulation of Disposable Plastic Tableware, which aims to reduce the use of single-use plastic foodware across the region.
