MeadWestvaco (MWV), a global leader in packaging solutions, and Interpress Technologies, an innovator and leader in printing and forming custom food packaging products, have announced the launch of a new joint product, the Snack Container. The Snack Container combines MWV’s innovations in barrier packaging and Interpress’s new converting technology in a next-generation paperboard container for packaged foods specifically designed to increase retail lift and provide environmental benefits for brand owners.

“After two years of research and product development, we are pleased to offer brand owners a product that creates a better package solution to meet the new demands of the market,” said Douglas Reid, marketing director, new business development, MWV, “The Snack Container uses coated MWV paperboard with Interpress’s SeamSeal technology.”

“It is architected to be lighter weight and, unlike composite cans, nestable, reducing shipping and warehouse costs as well as providing environmental benefits throughout the supply chain.” added Reid.

The MWV Snack Container has up to 50% weight reduction. The reduced weight coupled with increased renewable materials helps to improve retailers’ environmental scorecard performance.

Additionally, higher-quality paperboard substrates allow for high-impact graphics that provide exceptional visual appeal and improve shelf presence of the brand. A recent study shows that round containers face the wrong direction, on average, 16% of the time. The Snack Container provides size and shape customization options, helping to enhance brand visibility, appearance and ease of handling. In a concept test, the packaging shows 6% retail lift (improved purchase intent) over the composite can.

For products more susceptible to spoilage,
MWV and Interpress are working on a second iteration of the product that offers both a moisture barrier and an airtight, hermetically sealed lid, which is ideal for packaging nuts, chips and other snacks that contain oils.

“The hermetic seal is a huge technical challenge,” said Sandy Jaquish, vice president, sales and marketing, Interpress. “To create a paperboard package with an airtight barrier that is better for the environment, brands and retailers will be a great accomplishment and with this partnership, we look forward to achieving this great success.”

All MWV paperboards are compliant with a full range of rigorous, global food contact and safety standards including USFDA, ISEGA, CONEG, ASTM and RoHS.
