Spezialpapierfabrik Oberschmitten Glassine Paper

Spezialpapierfabrik Oberschmitten (SPO) is a traditional manufacturer of special papers located in the area of Frankfurt. The medium-sized paper mill is specialised in manufacturing glassine papers used in food and non-food products, and electrical papers used in capacitors, transformers and HV-cables. SPO distributes its products all over the world and has, over the years, developed into a truly modern company.

SPO’s specialities in glassine paper are highly transparent and coloured glassine papers with high density.

Glassine paper

Glassine paper is manufactured from a highly refined pulp. It is almost grease-resistant but does not have wet strength. Its high transparency is achieved by a special mechanical treatment.

The products are used in various applications for the packaging of food and non-food products. Glassine paper can also be used for the envelope industry and for gentle cooking, as well as table cloths, stationery and flower wrapping.

ECHO® Glassine paper is suitable for flexo and gravure printing. It is fully compostable in accordance to DIN EN 13432 so it offers savings for your waste management.

Glassine paper packaging for confectionery

Glassine paper is often used for confectionery packaging because of its purity, neutrality and grease resistance. For example, it’s used as cushion pad for chocolate boxes and as bags for chocolate; plain or corrugated paper is ideal for use as box liners.

We offer 13 standard colours in our range of glassine paper for confectionery (ECHO Col) and we can also produce special colours according to customer requests. Furthermore, we offer different embossings (Spider, Silkworm, B-Linen). The glassine paper can be used for coating, laminating and printing for food wrapping and other packaging materials. The coloured qualities are partially certified by XXXVI of BGA; please ask for more details.

Glassine paper for envelope windows

SPO can provide a highly transparent and dimensionally stable glassine paper, which is used as window material for envelopes and for the manufacture of medical bags.

It features high transparency and dimensional stability, and is available in transparent light blue, light yellow or light red. The window glassine is resistant to moisture due to the fact that it is free of chlorine and acid. It is well suited for windowing material for envelopes, for the manufacture of medical bags, as pouches for negatives and as protection for stamps in stamp albums.

ECHO Win is 100% recyclable, free of softening agents and meets the requirements of the Photographic Activity Test (ANSI IT9.2-1991, section 5.1.4). ECHO Win has various German and Swiss postal certificates that confirm machine readability and runability.

ECHO WIN is not only suitable for recycling envelopes, but also for wood-free white envelopes.

Glassine paper for bag manufacturing

By using a special kind of pulp and by reduced refining the glassine obtains a high tear and tensile strength. ECHO Bag is mainly used for bag manufacturing. The grease-proof characteristic is achieved by mechanical treatment only. It has a densely closed surface with good breathability and aroma density.

Glassine paper for food wrapping

Echo Glassine is suitable for food products according to:

  • BGA XXXVI
  • BGA XXXVI/2
  • American FDA
  • Italian Decredo Ministrale 21 marzo 1973

ECHO Glassine paper is suitable for food wrapping according to recommendation XXXVI of BGA and the American FDA, and may come in direct contact with fatty, dry and moist food. It is neutral with regard to taste and smell.
