Notably, Production Occupations jobs accounted for a 19% share of the North American packaging industry’s total new job postings in Q4 2023, drop 23% over the prior quarter.

Production Occupations drive packaging industry hiring activity

Production Occupations, with a share of 19% new job postings, was the occupation with the greatest hiring activity in the North American packaging industry in Q4 2023 , ahead of Office and Administrative Support Occupations with an 11% share of new job postings.

The other prominent roles included Transportation and Material Moving Occupations with a 10% share in Q4 2023, Installation, Maintenance, and Repair Occupations with a 10% share and Management Occupations with an 8% share of new job postings.

Top five companies accounted for 32% of hiring activity

International Paper posted 760 jobs in Q4 2023 and registered a decline of 41% over the previous quarter, followed by Cascades with 700 jobs and an 8% growth. Ball, with 519 jobs, and Berry Global Group, with 459 jobs, recorded a 19% drop and a 2% rise, respectively, while Pactiv Evergreen recorded a 6% decline with a 445 new job postings during Q4 2023.

The US held the leading share of the North American packaging hiring activity with a 91.90% share, a 27% decrease over Q3 2023. Canada was next with 6.05%, four-percentage-point up over the previous quarter.
