The global packaging industry experienced a 42% decline in the number of environmental sustainability-related patent applications in Q3 2022 compared with the previous quarter. The total number of environmental sustainability-related grants dropped by 44% in Q3 2022, according to GlobalData’s whitepaper on Environmental Sustainability in Packaging – Patenting Activity in Q3 2022.

Notably, the number of environmental sustainability-related patent applications in the packaging industry was 574 in Q3 2022, versus 995 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 7% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Nestle filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the packaging industry in Q3 2022. The company filed 14 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 4 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Prince with 8 environmental sustainability patent filings, Eastman Chemical (6 filings), and Mubadala Investment (6 filings) in Q3 2022.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 16% share of total patent filings

The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the packaging industry in Q3 2022 was in China with 16%, followed by the US (12%) and Japan (12%). The share represented by China was 27% lower than the 43% share it accounted for in Q2 2022.
