A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11814227B2) discloses a method for producing containerboard using Neutral Sulfite Semi Chemical (NSSC) pulp in a shoe press. The method involves pressing a web formed from the pulp with specific parameters such as a line load above 1200 kN/m, peak nip pressure of at least 90 bar, and a press impulse of at least 102 kPa*s. Additionally, the containerboard produced should have a geometric SCT index above 37 Nm/g. The method also includes variations such as applying steam to heat the web, using recycled fibers or reject pulp in addition to NSSC pulp, and maintaining a temperature of at least 45°C in the shoe press.

Furthermore, the patent includes specific parameters for the shoe press operation, such as a minimum nip length of 150 mm, a line load above 1300 kN/m, and a press impulse of at least 110 kPa*s. The temperature of the web in the shoe press can be increased to at least 55°C, and the geometric SCT index of the containerboard should be at least 38 Nm/g. Moreover, the method allows for variations in the pulp composition, with options to have at least 75% or 80% by dry weight of NSSC pulp. The grammage of the resulting containerboard is specified to be in the range of 100-200 g/m2, ensuring a certain level of quality and performance in the final product.
