Smurfit Kappa is a paper packaging provider and recognized in the 2023 Packaging Gateway Awards for Environmental, Innovation and Investments, following its development of water-resistant products, the competition of a sustainability project and investment in manufacturing facilities.

One of the company’s notable new products is AquaStop, a sustainable water-resistant paper. The product can be recycled like other paper-based packaging solutions and is aimed at products that need temporary protection from water such as flowers, detergents and fruit and vegetables.

The product is part of the company’s Better Planet Packaging portfolio, which is focused on providing sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics.

Other environmentally focused projects include the competition of a sustainability project at the company’s paper mill in Zülpich, Germany.

The company redesigned the plant’s multi-fuel boiler to use biogas for steam and electricity generation, a by-product of its circular water treatment plant, natural gas, and the residual materials.

The investment cuts carbon dioxide emissions by more than 25%, 2% of the company’s total, which it aims to reduce by 55% by 2030.

The company also invested €35m ($37.3m) to build a packaging plant in Rabat, Morocco. The 25,000m² facility will manufacture packaging for a range of sectors, including industrial, agriculture, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), automotive, pharmaceuticals and ceramics.
