Refresco Gerber to acquire PepsiCo bottling plant in Germany

Refresco Gerber agreed to acquire a bottling facility in Hamburg, Germany, from PepsiCo for an undisclosed amount, in a bid to strengthen its co-bottling activities.

The acquisition is in line with the company’s buy and build strategy, and is expected to further boost Refresco’s operations in the country’s soft drink and fruit juice market.

Refresco Gerber CEO Hans Roelofs said: "This transaction lies at the heart of our buy and build strategy and confirms our focus on expanding our co-packing business.

"We take an important leap forward in our German co-packing activities and further improve our market presence."

Ball to shut down can end-making plant in the US


Ball Corporation announced it plans to close its flat sheet production and can end-making plant in Weirton, West Virginia, US.

Singapore researchers develop new eco-friendly food packaging material


Researchers at the National University of Singapore (NUS) created a new packaging material that is claimed to double the shelf-life of food products.

The new environmentally friendly material was developed by fortifying natural chitosan-based composite film with grapefruit seed extract (GFSE).

Chitosan is a natural and biodegradable polymer that is derived from the shells of shrimp and other crustaceans. It offers biocompatibility, non-toxicity and high film-forming abilities.

iFoodbag receives EU grant to develop second-generation carrier bag

Swedish start-up iFoodbag received a €1.7m grant from the European Commission to develop a second-generation carrier bag.

The financial support will be provided under the Commission’s Horizon 2020 SME instrument programme for a period of two years.

Made out of a paper-based composite material, iFoodbag can protect chilled and frozen goods for up to 24h. However, it is subject to some temperature constraints and circumstances.

Dr Pepper Snapple Group (DPS) committed to collaborate with the industry, government and other community partners to achieve a beverage container recycling rate of 60% by 2030.

To bolster its commitment, the company entered a new partnership and is continuing an existing one to improve access to recycling across the US.

Over the next decade, the company is planning to invest $5m in the Closed Loop Fund, joining several firms’ supporting efforts to improve post-consumer recycling by providing critical funding for recycling infrastructure.

SRF plans to invest $58m in BOPET production facility in Indore, India

SRF planned to invest $58m in a greenfield biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BOPET) production facility at Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India.

Once operational, the proposed plant is expected to have a production capacity of 30,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) and a metallisation capacity of 8,000TPA, reported Business Standard.

The company intends to use more than 60% of the project’s production to cater to the food packaging and beverage industries.

Luxembourg’s Ardagh adds digital features to metal packaging


Luxembourg-based Ardagh Group partnered with Dutch watermark solutions company Filigrade to offer interactive print on its metal packaging products.

Under the new development, the company will embed an invisible watermark code into print-ready artwork, or on a specific area or the entire print design of the product’s packaging.

Using interactive print technology, customers will be able to obtain information about the product by scanning the code with a smartphone or tablet.
