Swedish-Swiss company ABB has announced the upgrade of its Lorentzen & Wettre (L&W) Bursting Strength Tester to deliver more precise, faster, easier, repeatable, and reliable operator-independent results via the process of digitalisation.
ABB describes bursting strength as a crucial material property that can directly impact a product’s performance in the paper-making process, as well as in converting and end-use operations.
Bursting strength testers are used by packaging manufacturers to measure a particular material’s resistance to rupture while optimising its cost and quality.
ABB said its newly upgraded L&W model will deliver faster results to ensure maximum value and returns on investment, in comparison to its previous generation’s models that required extra manual effort and took longer.
The upgraded tester comes at a competitive total cost of ownership throughout the lifetime of the product, claimed the company.
It comes with a large touchscreen, a user-friendly interface, and features a fast-testing sequence, along with safe and ergonomic operation capabilities to deliver operator-independent results.

Furthermore, the upgrade allows the tester to be integrated with several other of ABB’s offerings, including its L&W Lab Management System (LMS) and its Manufacturing Execution System.
ABB Paper Testing Equipment’s global product manager Ghazal Amar said: “Pulp and paper mill customers that transition to ABB’s new-generation L&W Bursting Strength Tester can look forward to the same long life cycle as other instruments from the L&W portfolio as well as the benefits with the new technology and digital opportunities.
“Connectivity to digital lab management systems like ABB’s L&W LMS automates reporting and enables mills to do more in less time.”
