APi Group and its subsidiary Accredo Packaging have teamed up with Presto Products’ Fresh-Lock team to launch a flexible stand-up pouch.

The packaging, with more than 50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, is claimed to be the first of its kind and is intended for the food industry.

The new product combines Fresh-Lock’s Child-Guard slider technology with AccredoFlex’s recycled content films, achieving high recycled material content in both the film and zipper closure.

The partnership has successfully created a child-resistant lock with at least 25% PCR material, ensuring reliable protection alongside a recyclable closure.

Fresh-Lock Market Development senior manager Todd Meussling said: “The PCR component is critical if true circularity in packaging is going to work. Flexible packaging continues to make great strides in sustainability beyond just the source reduction benefits from rigids.

“We’re seeing the shift from multimaterial structures to monomaterial options that can be recycled or composted.”

The initiative is said to reflect a significant step towards circular solutions for the two companies and the packaging industry.

API and Accredo Marketing and Sustainability vice-president Jonathan Quinn said: “Collaboration is crucial in driving the circular economy forward, so we are thrilled to join forces with the Fresh-Lock team at Presto to introduce this flexible stand-up pouch.

“The future of the circular economy hinges on incorporating recycled content and being able to do so across all consumer packaged goods markets.”
