ACG has introduced RecycloPod PP Ultra, a polypropylene-based blister packaging system designed to provide moisture and oxygen barrier protection while supporting recyclable packaging designs.

While existing polypropylene blister solutions meet moisture barrier needs, the company spotted a market gap regarding their limited oxygen protection.

RecycloPod PP Ultra has been designed for “sensitive” pharmaceutical formulations that require complete barrier protection, it said.

The product is the first release under ACG’s ‘Pod’ range of packaging solutions.

ACG Packaging Materials CEO SR Shivshankar said: “RecycloPod PP Ultra forms part of our wider sustainability strategy. We are participating in the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as part of its net-zero ambitions and using digitalisation to support more efficient and sustainable manufacturing, with facilities recognised by the World Economic Forum’s Global Lighthouse Network.”

The range has been developed with customers and is intended to address sustainability considerations, future packaging requirements and regulatory changes.

RecycloPod PP Ultra uses a PP/EVOH/PP forming structure.

It has a water vapour transmission rate of less than 0.60 g/m² per day and an oxygen transmission rate of less than 0.20 cm³/m² per day.

Combined with a PP lidding film, the material forms a predominantly polypropylene blister structure for thermoforming and sealing on pharmaceutical packaging lines.

Its development follows preparations by manufacturers for requirements including the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), alongside increased attention to packaging recyclability.

ACG Packaging Materials development & technology head Akbar Ali said: “With RecycloPod PP Ultra, our objective was to provide both high moisture and oxygen barrier protection while meeting the practical requirements of pharmaceutical manufacturing and supporting design for recyclability.”
