Supermarket chain Aldi has revealed plans to launch new cardboard packaging for its complete steak products range in the UK stores.

Beginning this October, all of Aldi’s 15 steak products will feature the new packaging. The packaging rollout will be in all 890 stores in the country, according to media reports.

The introduction follows a pilot testing conducted in 2019. It was carried out in its stores in some places of Wales, and England’s North West and South East.

With the use of the new packaging, the retailer expects to save approximately 1,100t of plastic annually.

Excluding the protective film, the new cardboard packaging is recyclable and has been made using materials obtained from forests that are managed sustainably.

Aldi UK corporate responsibility managing director Luke Peech was quoted by media sources as saying: “Reducing our plastic footprint is a fundamental area of focus for us as a business, and we’re constantly reviewing the products we offer to see where this is possible.”

“It can be challenging to balance tackling food waste with the need to reduce the amount of plastic we use, particularly with fresh meat. A successful trial has shown us that this new packaging enables us to do both.”

In July this year, Aldi Ireland reportedly pledged to cut down the plastic packaging volume across its operation to 50% by 2025.

Last week, another UK supermarket retailer Asda committed to getting rid of plastic fruit and vegetable bags from its stores.
