The flexible packaging structures are compliant with the Association of Plastic Recycler’s guidelines for PE [polyethylene] films and are supported by a pre-qualification letter, How2Recycle.

Conventional offerings tend to include multi-material laminates that cannot be reused or recycled.

Transitioning from complex laminates to PE-based materials compatible with recycling has required APC to use newer material offerings and process technologies.

The technologies employed in the print web included both blown and oriented print webs as well as some more recent innovations providing even greater heat resistance which helped to improve the manufacturing operating window.

The tailored sealants include compositions offering low seal initiation points, moisture and oxygen barrier properties, grease resistance and product durability.  Of particular concern was the proper selection of the print and sealants that provided the drop and durability required for the larger format pet food bags.

APC employed flexographic and rotogravure printing in combination with the print substrates for the desired appearance – gloss, matte, pattern matte/gloss or clear windows – as well as higher CoF [coefficient of friction] coatings that were important for maintaining stacking integrity in the large pallet formations.

APC’s other technologies in its sustainable packaging portfolio include Design for Compost, Circular Content and Renewable Content, as well as several additional Design for Recycle film and paper options.

APC’s manager of innovation and sustainability Jeff Travis commented: “Pet owners are increasingly focused on sustainable pet ownership. Having options for sustainable and potentially recyclable packaging is necessary.”
