Global packaging manufacturer Ardagh Group has developed a new lightweight aluminium seafood can.

Manufactured at the company’s plant in Cuxhaven, Germany, the seafood can has been designed with a conical wall thickness of 170mm, which is 0.215mm thinner than its nearest competitor.

The lightweight can features a thinner body and a ring-pull lid.

Currently available in 100g or 115g versions, the new can will initially be used by Germany-based Larsen Danish Seafood.

Ardagh Group metal division seafood commercial director Patrick Savouré said: "Our innovative ultra-thin seafood can is a continuation of the pioneering work that we carry out to achieve higher standards of performance with reduced material input and weight.

"The cooperation with our customer, Larsen, was a crucial part of the process."

"As is a feature of many of our important developments, the cooperation with our customer, Larsen, was a crucial part of the process, and I am delighted that the new can has been well received by their customers."

Ardagh Group’s technical service team at Cuxhaven developed a modified seaming technique to manufacture the can.

The team received assistance from the company’s R&D centre located in Crosmieres, France.

Tests were carried out to establish the best shape and size for the can’s beads, as well as ensure the correct distance between them to provide strength and stability.

Last month, the company created a shaped metal can for Mead Johnson’s new range of Enfinitas infant nutrition products.
