Bunzl UK & Ireland is set to add Huhtamaki’s ‘Taste’ hot food boxes, featuring Xampla’s Morro Coating technology, to its wide-ranging foodservice packaging offerings.
Morro Coating, derived from plants without chemical alteration, meets the European Single Use Plastic Directive’s (SUPD) plastic-free classification.
Xampla, a company focused on material innovation, said the boxes are made in the UK using responsibly sourced paper.
The boxes are now accessible through Bunzl’s distribution channels, reaching national restaurant chains, transport hubs, hotels, caterers, and stadiums across the region.
Available in multiple sizes, the Taste boxes feature an embossed Morro logo to indicate their plant-based coating.
The coating provides resistance to grease and leaks while ensuring the packaging remains recyclable. This collaboration followed a detailed assessment of the coating’s performance, recyclability, and disposal options.
Xampla’s plant protein-based technology offers manufacturers and brands a practical, scalable solution to meet regulatory, environmental, and consumer expectations, according to the company.
This move follows recent developments such as Just Eat Takeaway.com’s use of Morro-coated delivery boxes for over 40,000 restaurant partners in Germany.
The partnership aligns with Xampla’s licensing agreement with 2M Group of Companies, which supplies manufacturers such as Huhtamaki, a key partner in bringing the coating to market.
Bunzl UK & Ireland will exclusively distribute these boxes in the UK and the Republic of Ireland until October 2025.
Xampla CEO Alexandra French said: “The launch of Huhtamaki’s ‘Taste’ boxes with Morro Coating represents a new level of success for Xampla.
“Our exclusive partnership with Bunzl sees Morro Coating introduced to a significant number of foodservice operators in the UK and Ireland for the first time, presenting their customers with the very latest in SUPD-exempt materials and product innovation.
“Bunzl UK & Ireland’s established distribution networks are second to none, and we are delighted to be exclusively partnering together.”
