
Mondelēz International’s brand Cadbury has revealed that its sharing bars, including Dairy Milk and Fruit & Nut, will now be wrapped in packaging composed of 80% certified recycled material.
This initiative is projected to affect around 300 million bars each year, signalling a notable change in the brand’s packaging approach.
The updated packaging will incorporate 600 tonnes (t) of post-consumer recycled plastic annually.
This initiative is part of Cadbury’s dedication to sustainability and minimising its environmental impact.
The company noted that advanced recycling technology has been utilised to produce the new packaging, enabling the conversion of used plastic back into food-grade, flexible plastic.
The initiative follows a mass balance methodology, ensuring that the recycled content complies with international sustainability criteria.
Although the actual quantity of recycled plastic in each package may fluctuate, Cadbury has pledged to attribute an equivalent of 80% recycled content.
The shift to this new packaging has already commenced, with several products with the update now available in stores.
Cadbury’s objective is for all sharing bars sold in the UK and Ireland to be wrapped in the new material by the conclusion of 2025.
This transition is part of Mondelēz International’s wider ‘Pack Light and Right’ strategy, which aims to decrease the use of virgin plastic.
