Making the Packaging System Fit the Circular Economy

For the packaging industry to achieve a sustainable future, it needs to dramatically increase circularity and the reuse of materials. While shifting from a linear economy to a circular model will take time, there are already actions that brands, manufacturers, and converters can already take to help make a difference. This document by Siegwerk – a global leader in inks and coatings for packaging – delves into solving the plastic paradox, looks at the relevance of bioplastics, and sets out ways to not only achieve circularity in packaging but also make it economically viable. Furthermore, the document goes into detail on how printing inks and coatings are vital for enabling circularity in packaging. Ultimately, the packaging system needs to be reconfigured for a circular future. And consumers are expecting the packaging industry to play its part in progress. The move is part of Cascades’ continuing optimisation initiatives for its Containerboard Packaging business.

The company will complete the permanent closure of the operation by 31 July this year.

Cascades Containerboard Packaging president and chief operating officer Charles Malo said: “As part of the consolidation of our sheet plant operations in Ontario, we will be gradually redeploying production from the Brown facility to our other units in Ontario.

‘’This decision was necessary to align present production capacities, position our platform for mid and long-term success, improve productivity, reduce fixed costs and strengthen our service offering for our valued customers.”

In order to minimise the effect of this closure, which will affect 45 employees working in this facility, employees are granted option to transfer to Cascades’ other business units.

Based in Toronto, Cascades is involved in the recovery and manufacturing of green packaging and tissue products.

Earlier this month, the company expanded its packaging solutions with a new product line which is categorised under the company’s packaging solutions for e‑commerce.

The customised, creative and sustainable packaging solutions are intended for online retailers.

The company operates over 90 facilities in North America and Europe employing 12,000 staff.
