Joint venture packaging company Cascades Sonoco has launched a new water-based barrier coating, FlexSHIELD, for folding carton applications.
FlexSHIELD has been designed to replace the standard polyethylene coating used on folding carton grades to create traditional food take-out containers.
Cascades Sonoco’s new barrier coating makes the take out box compostable when used to recycled paperboard.
The new barrier coating is also designed to be flexible and resist cracking when the folding boxboard is cut, scored, bent and folded.
Cascades Sonoco sales and marketing director Sandy McArthur said: “Given the increasing demand for paper-based take-out containers, and in light of many cities banning expanded polystyrene containers (the white Styrofoam food containers you see so often), FlexSHIELD offers a unique, functional and viable option for making paperboard take-out containers much more environmentally attractive given their compostability.”
FlexSHIELD has already been used by natural and organic food supermarket chains in US.
It protects containers from water, oil grease, sauces, toppings and other liquid or thick substances.
Folded paperboard containers that have been manufactured with FlexSHIELD can be used in several applications, such as food service trays and takeout, bakery products or other non-food products.
Sonoco ThermoSafe recently introduced a new line of three-day and five-day temperature controlled packaging solutions, the Certis platform, for the distribution of pharmaceutical and biological products.
