Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company (HBC) Switzerland has announced that bottles for its local water brand, Valser, will now be made using recycled PET (rPET) plastic.

Aligned with its ‘World Without Waste’ initiative, devised with its partner, The Coca‑Cola Company, the alteration comes as part of Coca‑Cola HBC’s efforts to use more sustainable packaging options.

The switch to the new material for its packaging will begin immediately, starting with the 500ml bottle of Valser Sparkling.

All PET bottles are expected to be made of 100% recycled material by the end of 2019.

In the last two months, the company launched bottles using 100% rPET bottles for two of its other water brands, with Deep RiverRock in Ireland and Römerquelle in Austria.

Coca‑Cola HBC Group supply chain director Marcel Martin said: “Valser is the third major water brand that we have launched in bottles made from 100% recycled PET.

“We will soon increase this to four brands in four markets. This is a great achievement that represents a huge effort to overcome the significant technical and manufacturing challenges.”

As part of its ‘World Without Waste’ initiative, Coca‑Cola HBC aims to make all consumer packaging 100% recyclable by 2025, while the plan also includes making all packaging with at least 50% recycled material by 2030.

Moreover, it has plans to partner with non-government organisations, customers and stakeholders, as a part of their sustainability efforts.

Coca‑Cola HBC Switzerland sustainability and quality head Patrick Wittweiler said: “Sustainability is not just important to us, but also to our consumers and customers.

“That’s why we have been working on our sustainability agenda for many years now, and why we make every effort to reduce our impact on the environment. The shift to 100% rPET is a milestone in that agenda, and one we are very proud of.”
