Constantia Flexibles has officially launched an expanded rolling mill at its key manufacturing facility, Constantia Teich, in Weinburg, Austria.

The company, which specialises in flexible packaging, has invested €50m ($56.27m) in the project.

The development forms part of the company’s broader commitment to local production, and it is claimed to support more sustainable aluminium foil manufacturing within Europe.

Alongside the mill expansion, an additional €30m has been allocated to install a new lacquering unit.

All machinery and technology were procured from suppliers within Europe.

These include foil stock furnaces, a rolling machine, a separator, and dual-chamber foil furnaces.

The project also added a high-bay warehouse extension.

A portion of the plant’s electricity will be sourced from renewable energy. This includes a company-operated photovoltaic installation to help power operations.

The facility upgrade enables increased output in key growth areas such as coffee capsules, pharmaceuticals, and food packaging.

Constantia Flexibles Aluminum Division and Group Sustainability executive vice-president Daniel Winkler said: “With this investment, we are making a clear statement for growth, innovation, and sustainability.

“By expanding the rolling mill, we are increasing aluminium foil production by around 30% up to 90,000 tons of aluminium foil per year, making our largest plant in the group also one of the largest integrated producers in Europe.

“At the same time, we are making a significant contribution to decarbonisation, avoiding approximately 100,000 tons of CO₂ [carbon dioxide] emissions.”

This March, Constantia Flexibles acquired a significant stake in the flexible packaging and barrier solutions company Aluflexpack.
