US-based Dow Chemical Company has partnered with non-profit organisation Keep America Beautiful to provide two grants to companies, with an aim to increase plastic recycling across the country.

The new $50,000 grants will be provided to US-based organisations to establish Hefty EnergyBag plastic recycling programmes in their respective communities.

Dow’s Hefty EnergyBag programme aims to divert traditionally non-recycled plastics, including chip bags and juice pouches, from landfills and convert the materials into valuable energy sources.

In order to obtain the newly announced grant, municipalities, non-profits, material recovery facilities, and other qualifying organisations are required to submit their applications by 1 September 2017.

The selected organisations will be given a blueprint to develop a successful Hefty EnergyBag programme, with planning and implementation support from Dow.

The grant recipients will manage the programmes and seek involvement of key community stakeholders.

"The Hefty EnergyBag programme demonstrates Dow’s commitment to advancing a circular economy, a pillar of our 2025 sustainability goals."

Dow Chemical Company chief sustainability officer Neil Hawkins said: “The Hefty EnergyBag programme demonstrates Dow’s commitment to advancing a circular economy, a pillar of our 2025 sustainability goals.

“In partnership with Keep America Beautiful, these grants will enable the growth of this important initiative and show the power of a collaborative blueprint for reducing landfill waste and waste released to the environment, two critical global priorities.”

Dow’s Global Citizenship Impact Fund will provide the new grant for the Hefty EnergyBag programme, which was fully launched in Omaha, Nebraska, US, in September 2016.

Since its launch, the programme has been expanded from 6,000 to 8,500 households.
