UK packaging company DS Smith has developed a transport box for Austria-based BWT [Best Water Technology] to protect the latter’s MACH Water Filters during transit.

The solution has been created to accommodate two different MACH water filter models, a system widely regarded as a next-generation automatic backwash filter designed to protect domestic water pipes.

DS Smith Austria cluster design and innovation manager Andreas Koch said: “Through close collaboration and use of our Circular Design Metrics (CDM) tools to measure a packaging design’s sustainability performance across eight key indicators, from materials utilisation to recyclability, a bespoke corrugated packaging solution was developed for the delivery of optimal protection, sustainability, and efficiency.

According to DS Smith, the packaging has been engineered to safeguard the product, support logistics, and improve material efficiency from production through transportation and final handling.

The company said its design and implementation team developed the box so that MACH water filters, accessories, and sensitive product components remain securely fixed in position.

A key feature of the design is an integrated, triangular-shaped corrugated cardboard insert. This element forms a flexible accessory compartment using a dividing piece of material built directly into the packaging structure.

The inserts are also designed to shield the MACH filters from shocks and unexpected impacts during the supply chain journey by separating the products from the base of the packaging casement and raising them above floor level.

The transport box itself uses a double-wall corrugated cardboard construction, creating what DS Smith described as a rigid, durable, and strong format.

The company added that the compact design cuts material usage while also cutting down on empty space within the pack.

DS Smith also said the transport box can be integrated into the water treatment technology manufacturer’s existing packaging lines without disruption.

The finished packaging uses a natural brown corrugated board appearance, complemented by white flexographic printing on the outside surface.

BWT CEO Andreas Weißenbacher said: “By lowering the number of plastic components used in product packaging, we are conserving valuable resources and supporting more sustainable manufacturing practices. At the same time, the streamlined production setup – requiring only a single converting machine after corrugated production – creates significant cost efficiencies and improves overall production efficiency.”

Last month, DS Smith launched a fibre-based corrugated cardboard pack, described as 100% recyclable, for Geefeenboompje.nl’s tree gift products.
