Global life sciences and materials sciences company Royal DSM is currently evaluating site locations for a new plant to manufacture Akulon polyamide 6 (PA6) polymer in North America.

The extrusion grades of Akulon PA6 are used in the flexible food packaging industry.

Construction of the proposed plant is expected to commence in the fourth quarter, with completion slated to take place during mid-2016.

DSM engineering plastics president Roelof Westerbeek said: "This new plant is our first polymerisation plant for high viscosity grades in North America for Akulon polyamide 6, besides our existing infrastructure in Europe and Asia. It thus fits perfectly with our growth strategy for materials sciences, as it strengthens our global position in PA6-based films."

DSM engineering plastics Americas president Richard Pieters said: "We are determined to grow further in the packaging industry where we have already proven to meet our customers’ demand with our in-depth application know-how and innovative solutions."

DSM also offers a range of high-performance engineering plastics including Arnitel TPC copolyester, Arnite PBT and PET polyesters, Stanyl high performance polyamide 46 and 4T, and bio-based engineering plastics EcoPaXX polyamide 410 and Arnitel Eco copolyester. Akulon polyamide 6 has a strong barrier against oxygen and aromas in addition to mechanical strength and durability, and helps to reduce food lost or wasted.
