GreenPE

KuR Kunststoff, Oerlemans Plastics, and BK Pac have collaborated to introduce a product line to promote the use of bio-based plastics in sustainable foodstuffs film packaging.

The product line is based on Green PE sugar cane-based polyethylene, which has been manufactured by biopolymer producer Braskem.

The product is claimed to reduce the environmental impact caused by greenhouse gases as renewable raw materials binds up to 2.15t of atmospheric CO2 for each tonne of Green PE.

As part of the partnership, FKuR will be responsbile for the distribution of Green PE, while Oerlemans Plastics will use it to produce flexible films at its plants in the Netherlands.

"Our successful collaboration with Oerlemans Plastics and BK Pac is typical of our continuous search for ways of increasing product sustainability by using renewable resources."

The films that are printed and perforated by Oerlemans Plastics will be distributed to Scandinavian firm BK Pac, which specialises in packaging materials such as films, nets and trays for vegetables, fruit, meat and other foodstuffs. It will also give feedback that can help with further development and innovation.

FKuR Kunststoff marketing and distribution manager Patrick Zimmermann said: "Our successful collaboration with Oerlemans Plastics and BK Pac is typical of our continuous search for ways of increasing product sustainability by using renewable resources.

"It is also a model for many further possible national and multinational cooperative projects. It clearly demonstrates the potential of such projects to conserve resources and help to maintain an environmental balance while at the same time generating economic benefits along the entire value chain by using Green PE."
