US research firm GreenBlue has announced plans to pilot the new Packaging Recovery Label System in 2012.

The Packaging Recovery Label System is a voluntary label developed by the organisation’s Sustainable Packaging Coalition to increase recycling by reducing the uncertainty of recycling packages after their use

It is set to comply with Federal Trade Commission ‘Green Guides’ and uses nationally accurate recyclability data.

Companies including ConAgra Foods, Costco Wholesale, Microsoft, REI and Seventh Generation have agreed to implement the label on select packaging from the beginning of 2012.

The system is expected to receive support from state and local governments addressing recycling challenges.
