Plastic packaging manufacturer Greiner Packaging has committed to circularity of polystyrene (PS) by joining Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS).
The move is in line with Greiner Packaging’s aim towards sustainable plastics solutions.
By joining the initiative, the company can now collaborate with partners along the entire value chain.
Greiner Packaging circular economy director Konrad Wasserbauer said: “Our entire company is committed to developing sustainable plastics solutions for a functioning circular economy.
“Our SCS membership was a natural step for us to take, fully in line with Greiner Packaging’s vision that sustainability and plastics go hand in hand.
“The truth is that polystyrene is highly recyclable even for food contact applications and thus has a crucial role to play in the circular economy. We look forward to working together to realise that vision.”
With operations across 19 different countries around the world, Greiner Packaging is a European plastic packaging manufacturer in the food and non-food sector.
It will join other members of SCS including COEXPAN, ELIX Polymers, Exiba, INEOS Styrolution, Repsol, TOMRA, Total, Trinseo and Versalis (Eni).
Last year, Greiner Packaging and Trinseo partnered to advance the use of recycled PS (r-PS) in packaging materials.
Styrenics Circular Solutions aims to enhance the circularity of styrenics products while improving resource efficiency.
It encourages the development of new recycling technologies and solutions.
SCS secretary-general Jens Kathmann said: “We are delighted that as 2020 progresses, our membership keeps expanding. We are so pleased to welcome Greiner Packaging, a company strongly committed to the circular economy and fulfilling the intrinsic capacity for recycling of polystyrene.”
