German firm Heidelberger Druckmaschinen is set to acquire the MBO Group to further expand its postpress offerings for digitally printed products.

The takeover will also enable Heidelberger to enhance its customer base in the pharmaceutical industry, while also improving its offset portfolio through the addition of mailing system offerings.

The transaction is in line with the company’s strategy to align its portfolio and new business model with the growth segments of digital and packaging.

Through this extended offering, Heidelberg also intends to tap into new customer groups for its entire product portfolio.

Heidelberg CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer said: “The planned takeover of the MBO Group enables us to attain further sustainable and profitable growth by leveraging new technologies and customer segments.

“By acquiring MBO’s digital portfolio, we are closing a gap for our customers and helping them achieve a smooth industrial process in the digital future. We also expect to see synergies in our own value-added chain, which will bring about tangible benefits for customers too.”

“The takeover is another important step in offering our customers a comprehensive portfolio that generates value.”

As part of the deal, Heidelberg will acquire MBO Group’s sites in Oppenweiler and Bielefeld, Germany, as well as a production site in Perifita, Portugal. These sites have a combined workforce of around 450 people.

Heidelberg expects the Portugal site to offer opportunities for expansion.

Heidelberg Management Board member Stephan Plenz said: “Even when postpress operations are running efficiently, there is still huge potential for boosting productivity throughout the entire print shop.

“The takeover is another important step in offering our customers a comprehensive portfolio that generates value and covers everything from technology and consumables right through to service.”

MBO Group’s operations had around €50m in sales. Its technology is said to be complementary to Heidelberg’s product range.

Subject to the receipt of approval from antitrust authorities, the provisional completion of the transaction is slated for the end of this year.

MBO Group serves customers in printing, packaging, and labelling, as well as pharmaceutical and marketing sectors.
