Ireland-based agricultural processing and food companies have partnered to produce sustainable plastic packaging for their respective supply chains.
The 11 companies are from various segments of Ireland’s agricultural food sector, including beef, poultry, lamb, fruit, vegetables, dairy, prepared meals and packed salad sectors.
Participating companies across various categories include ABP, Manor Farm, Irish Country Meats, Keelings, Monaghan Mushrooms, Country Crest, Ballymaguire, Nature’s Best, Aurivo, Bandon Vale, and C&D Foods.
Bord Bia former CEO Aidan Cotter will serve as the chair of the new project. A steering committee comprising of senior executives from each of these companies will drive the project.
As part of the collaboration, companies will focus on finding ways to reduce single-use packaging from the supply chain and introduce sustainable alternatives using their food production expertise.
Cotter said: “The coming together of 11 of the leading key players in Irish food production to look to arrive at solutions for the issue of plastics packaging is a significant development.
“These companies are leaders in their respective sectors and their combined experience will create a dynamic force that will likely punch well above its weight in seeking tangible solutions for the significant reduction of the use of plastic packaging on Ireland’s supermarket shelves.”
The company will work closely with researchers in the area of plastics and packaging to get successful outcomes by using their international networks.
