Making the Packaging System Fit the Circular Economy

For the packaging industry to achieve a sustainable future, it needs to dramatically increase circularity and the reuse of materials. While shifting from a linear economy to a circular model will take time, there are already actions that brands, manufacturers, and converters can already take to help make a difference. This document by Siegwerk – a global leader in inks and coatings for packaging – delves into solving the plastic paradox, looks at the relevance of bioplastics, and sets out ways to not only achieve circularity in packaging but also make it economically viable. Furthermore, the document goes into detail on how printing inks and coatings are vital for enabling circularity in packaging. Ultimately, the packaging system needs to be reconfigured for a circular future. And consumers are expecting the packaging industry to play its part in progress. The initiative ‘Simple Truth Recycling Program’ aims to make flexible packaging recycling of more than 300 products from Simple Truth easy and free for its customers.

The retailer has partnered with international recycling firm TerraCycle for the development of the platform.

Kroger corporate affairs group vice-president and chief sustainability officer Keith Dailey said: “A key part of achieving our ambitious Zero Hunger | Zero Waste vision is offering our customers innovative solutions to recycle and reuse product packaging.

“We’re thrilled to partner with TerraCycle to launch our new Simple Truth Recycling Program, supporting our sustainable packaging goals and enabling Kroger customers to recycle their favourite Simple Truth and Simple Truth Organic products without ever leaving home.”

Leveraging Kroger’s new platform, customers can recycle a wide range of flexible packaging including produce bags, bread bags and plastic overwrap from household items like tissues and bottled water.

These products are not currently accepted in curbside recycling programmes.

As of now, the Simple Truth Recycling Program is accessible for individuals, schools, offices and community organisations across the US.

The US natural and organic brand Simple Truth offers more than 2,000 natural and organic products.

Last month, TerraCycle partnered with Cathedral City to introduce a recycling programme in the UK for various cheese packaging.
