The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO), the crown corporation that retails and distributes wine, beer, and spirits in Ontario, Canada, is phasing out the use of single-use paper bags at its retail stores, effective from 5 September 2023.

The entity is encouraging customers to bring their own reusable bags when shopping in-store.

Used cardboard boxes and eight-pack carriers will, however, be continued to be made available to customers at no extra cost.

The initiative is expected to help the LCBO reduce its own impact on the environment while creating a more sustainable Ontario.

The LCBO has said that the phasing out of single-use paper bags could remove nearly 135 million paper bags annually from its numerous retail stores and convenience outlets, which consequently could divert 2,665 tonnes of waste from landfill.

From the set deadline, the LCBO will make a six-bottle bag and a large reusable bag available for purchase for $2.95 while a new two-bottle reusable bag will be available for $1.25.
