Metsä Board has decided to upgrade the winder on the board machine at its Kemi mill as part of an investment in finishing operations.
According to the company, the project is intended to improve product consistency, production performance and delivery dependability at the mill.

The work is scheduled to take place during the site’s annual maintenance stoppage in October and November 2026.
The Kemi site has a 465,000tpa production capacity and develops coated white-top kraftliners used as the outer layer in corrugated packaging.
Metsä Board said the upgrade will support the mill’s role in international deliveries by helping maintain stable quality and dependable supply.
Kemi board mill vice-president Tomi Seppä said: “This winder modernisation strengthens our finishing operations and supports our ability to deliver consistent, high-quality products to our customers.
“At the same time, it improves operational stability and ensures dependable deliveries.”
The move comes after Metsä Group said it would invest €25m ($28.9m) in a new Muoto fibre packaging production line in Äänekoski, Finland. Operations at the facility are expected to start in 2028.
The new line is to be built at the company’s mill area in Äänekoski, next to the current Muoto demonstration plant.
Metsä Board makes lightweight folding boxboards, foodservice boards and white kraftliners. In 2025, it reported sales of €1.8bn and had 1,900 employees.
