Making the Packaging System Fit the Circular Economy

For the packaging industry to achieve a sustainable future, it needs to dramatically increase circularity and the reuse of materials. While shifting from a linear economy to a circular model will take time, there are already actions that brands, manufacturers, and converters can already take to help make a difference. This document by Siegwerk – a global leader in inks and coatings for packaging – delves into solving the plastic paradox, looks at the relevance of bioplastics, and sets out ways to not only achieve circularity in packaging but also make it economically viable. Furthermore, the document goes into detail on how printing inks and coatings are vital for enabling circularity in packaging. Ultimately, the packaging system needs to be reconfigured for a circular future. And consumers are expecting the packaging industry to play its part in progress. The companies have created a stand-up pouch made of mono-material that is designed to replace the rigid plastic containers previously used by Kao.

Mondi said its EcoSolutions approach has helped Kao reduce its overall plastic content in individual packs by 80% without compromising on strength and durability.

The pouches are designed to prevent contact with moisture or incoming vapour while the tightly sealed packs are intended to prevent chemical diffusion.

In addition, the packaging features a recyclable top slider and tamper-evident membrane designed to offer convenient reclosing.

The lightweight pouch comes inside a carton box along with paper instructions, allowing the pouch to be stacked when stored to minimise its carbon footprint.

Empty pouches can also be folded flat during transportation.

Goldwell is a haircare business offering a range of haircare, styling and colour products.

The company is a ‘salon-quality’ subsidiary of Kao Salon Division, the world’s fourth-largest haircare business.

Mondi regional sales consumer flexibles Iris Ross said: “The solution we developed with Kao contains a chemical-based product that is particularly sensitive, so we needed to consider safety and quality at all times.

“The new packs are completely secure during shipment when filled and easy to transport.

“Kao is passionate about making the right changes for a more sustainable world while ensuring the high quality and user-friendliness of its products, to deliver the best customer experience.

“It was a pleasure to work with the Kao team on creating this product.”

The packaging is intended to expedite Kao and its salon business’ commitment to achieving zero-waste as part of their overall sustainability strategy.

Mondi recently developed a range of ‘fit-for-purpose’ packaging solutions for the fresh produce market.
