Mondi has commenced operations at its Duino mill in Italy, where the company has repurposed an existing paper machine to manufacture recycled containerboard.
The upgraded machine at the Duino mill is expected to generate an annual output of 420,000t of recycled containerboard.
The mill will produce a range of products, including fluting starting at 80gsm and testliner beginning at 90gsm.
The machine will also produce paper reels between 0.95m and 3.35m wide, making it the broadest recycled paper machine in Mondi’s portfolio.
Klaus Peller, chief operations officer of Mondi Containerboard, stated: “Launching this mill on time shows the strength and commitment of our team and is illustrative of our long-term promise to our containerboard customers.
“With this paper machine, we are investing in their future too – ensuring resilient supply, sustainable packaging products, great service and the opportunity to grow together.”
The strategic location of the Mondi Duino mill offers logistical advantages, providing short delivery distances to local and neighbouring markets.
Mondi’s containerboard offerings now include a variety of paper grades, from completely recycled to entirely virgin fibre, catering to diverse packaging requirements.
With the inclusion of the Duino mill, Mondi extends its global network to six containerboard mills.
Mondi recently launched a paper-based mattress packaging solution, CompressWrap, for Nordic furniture producer Ekornes’ mattresses.
Ekornes replaced existing plastic wrappers with Mondi’s re/cycle CompressWrap to wrap its mattresses for protection during transportation.
In August 2025, Mondi expanded its sustainable high-performance paper barrier range with the launch of FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate.
The high barrier applications of FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate make it suitable for packaging a range of products, including instant coffee sticks, tea sachets, dried food seasonings, and muesli or cereal bars. This ensures a long shelf life and convenience for consumers.
