Premium portioned coffee provider Nespresso has pledged to make every cup of its coffee carbon neutral by 2022.

This commitment, which is part of the company’s broader sustainability ambitions, will deal with reducing carbon emissions across its supply chain and product life cycle.

Since 2017, the company has been able to achieve carbon neutrality in its business operations.

As part of the new ambition, Nespresso will indulge in initiatives such as increasing the use of 100% renewable energy in all its boutiques and biogas in production process.

The company will make use of recycled plastic in Nespresso machines, and recycled and low carbon virgin aluminum in coffee capsules.

In addition, it will plant trees in and around coffee farms where Nespresso sources its coffee; and through offsetting projects.

Nespresso CEO Guillaume Le Cunff said: “Climate change is a reality and our future depends on going further and faster on our sustainability commitments.

“That is why we are accelerating our commitments to offer our consumers a way to drink a carbon neutral cup of coffee by 2022.

“A coffee, made from the finest and rarest beans, sustainably sourced. I truly believe that both our business and the coffee industry can be a force for good in the world by tackling this pressing issue.”

Earlier this month, Nespresso Canada enhanced sustainability with the launch of new capsules made of 80% recycled aluminium and entirely recyclable boxes which are made of 95% recycled material.

Last month, the company partnered with aluminium rolling and recycling company Novelis to launch a sustainable coffee capsule.
