Start-up firm NWB Finland has unveiled an eco-friendly Bag-in-Box packaging for liquids to help cut costs.
Known as NWB packaging, the new solution, which is claimed to be recyclable, user-friendly and logistically efficient, can be used for different liquids such as water, wine, fruit juice, milk and olive oil.
The packaging fits easily into the fridge and ensures the liquid stays cooler for a longer time.
It utilises DS Smith Plastics’ Bag-in-Box principle and comprises an outer cardboard box, a flexible bag and a dispenser.
The box offers protection from direct sunlight as well as savings of up to 90% in waste transportation when compared to plastic bottles as it is flattened after use.
DS Smith Plastics’ Rapak supplied the bag and the dispensing tap, which ensures the liquid does not come into contact with air even after opening.
Depending on the product type and storage conditions, the air-tight flexible bag has the ability to offer an additional 1-20 weeks of product shelf life.
NWB packaging is claimed to use 72% less plastic than PET bottle, and offer 35% less delivery traffic and 90% less waste traffic.
In addition to extended shelf life and better barrier protection against light and oxygen, other benefits offered by DS Smith Plastics’ Bag-in-Box packaging include maximised storage efficiency, and reduced logistics costs and carbon footprint.
Rapak offers a range of bag offerings, including standard, aseptic, Intasept and bulk options such as EVOH or PE bags, polyethylene films, nylon/LLDPE films laminate or co-extruded.
