O-I Glass has dedicated part of its research and development efforts to decarbonising the wine industry at the packaging level.

The new 75cl bottle under O-I Glass’s Estampe brand has been validated by climate consultancy the Carbon Trust for its footprint and carbon reduction approach.

With a weight of 390g and using 82% recycled glass in its manufacture, the Estampe bottle’s carbon footprint is 25% less than that of classic 500g bottles at only 249g of CO₂ equivalent.

The bottle’s performance can be further optimised by the dematerialisation of the overlapping capsule and the adoption of a cork stopper and a paper label.

Its residual carbon footprint is being offset by the purchase of carbon credits, including the planting of orchards in France and the financing of a reforestation project in Brazil.

O-I Glass general manager in France and Spain Walter Ferrer commented: “In line with the demands of winegrowers and bottlers, Estampe offers a packaging solution expected by the market and is already giving rise to the first sales.”
