Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE) has provided a new manifesto, urging the EU to implement required changes and policies to achieve ‘genuine’ plastics circularity.

To develop this circular plastic ecosystem, PRE has proposed five main priorities or actions.

These include expediting efforts to promote European businesses and households to transition towards circular plastics, the requirement of addressing systemic barriers by European institutions, and encouraging harmonised collection systems across the EU.

The association has called upon the EU to establish ‘realistic targets’ for recycling and recycled content.

PRE also highlighted the need to establish a decisive action plan to counter the issue of greenwashing and suggested establishing a ‘level playing field’ for all products imported to or manufactured in the EU.

PRE president Ton Emans said: “Plastics recycling has proved itself as one of the vital components of a circular economy in Europe. To unlock its full potential, necessary incentives, targeting the entire value chain must be set to drive investments towards EU recycling capacities and technological developments.”

All these efforts will further help EU nations to gradually transition towards the Green Deal.

According to PRE, European institutions will face a ‘decisive moment’ between 2024 and 2029 to achieve the Green Deal’s objectives.
