US-based environmental services provider Republic Services has inaugurated what it claims to be North America’s first vertically integrated plastics recycling facility.

Located in Las Vegas, Nevada, the advanced Polymer Center will process plastic bottles, jugs, and containers, converting them into plastic materials ready for new packaging.

Claimed to also be the largest dual-line plastics recycling plant in the US, the facility will be capable of producing more than 50,000t of food-grade recycled material annually for use in packaging.

Stadler Anlagenbau worked in collaboration with manufacturing company Krones to design and install the new polymer centre.

Krones served as the general contractor of the Polymer Center while Stadler was responsible for the mechanical sorting on its polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyolefin (PO) lines.

The facility can sort and process five tons an hour of materials on each of its two lines, one for PET and the other for mixed plastics.

The recovered PET is transformed into recycled PET flakes while PO is prepared for new bottles, jugs, and container production.

Republic Services recycling and sustainability vice-president Pete Keller said: “Republic Services is committed to challenging every truckload we collect from customers and advancing circularity for key materials.

“The Polymer Center will help enable true bottle-to-bottle and package-to-package circularity for plastics, helping customers achieve their own sustainability goals. Our integrated regional hub-and-spoke model will ensure nationwide coverage.”

The Las Vegas Polymer Center is part of Republic Services’ larger plan to establish a nationwide network of such facilities.
