US-based onion producer River Point Farms has commenced construction on a new onion packaging facility in Hermiston, Oregon.
Spread over an area of around 70,000ft², the facility will employ advanced equipment, with plans to double the company's production capacity over the next year.
The company plans to invest around $17.5m in the facility, which is expected to be completed by the end of July 2015.
The company will operate 95,000ft² of whole onion packaging and shipping facilities.
River Point Farms CEO Bob Hale said: "As we nurture our current customers and prepare for growth, seamless execution in packaging and shipping facilities is paramount to our success.
"The new packaging facility provides us with an opportunity to fully automate our whole onion sorting and packaging process with a high level of accuracy and efficiency and also allows us to convert our current packing facility into a state-of-the-art shipping facility."
The company claims that the new facility will allow for amplification of capabilities and improvements in partnerships with customers as a single-source, year-round supplier of farm fresh onions.
During the construction phase, River Point Farms will continue to operate at its current facility until the new facility becomes operational.
