s.Oliver Group, which operates the s.Oliver and QS by s.Oliver brands, says as of July 2022, the plastic packaging (polybags) used for its products is made of 100% recycled material. While in addition to this, the group has established a closed material cycle where used polybags are collected and made into new ones.

Polybags are used to protect the products from dirt and damage during transport and logistics handling and to ensure that end consumers receive the product in perfect condition. s.Oliver Group says as it is currently not feasible to leave out this packaging component entirely, an interdisciplinary team was tasked with looking for more sustainable alternatives.

After weighing up all the criteria, the team opted for a certified recycled material, the percentage of which has been successively increased in recent months. The goal is to create a closed material cycle which is fed as far as possible by the group’s own wastage. Accordingly, all polybags intended for the group’s own stores are collected and fed back into the material cycle of packaging partner Mainetti. The collection of polybags from other sales channels is currently in the planning stages.

s.Oliver Group says a responsible approach toward resources is a core element of its sustainability strategy. It is therefore a long-term goal to make the switch from materials, products and packaging made from fossil and nonrenewable raw materials to recyclates and non-fossil sources, it says.

The polybag is one of the most important packaging components with at least 50 million bags being used per year, making this switch a huge milestone for the group, it adds.

A number apparel brands and retailers have made the switch to more sustainable options regarding packaging and polybags and recent years, including US lifestyle brand Outerknown which previously said it is eliminating plastic polybags from its global supply network in favour of paper bags.
