Saudi Arabia’s Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) has introduced a new sustainable frozen prawns packaging pouch for use by cold-water prawn processor and exporter company Coldwater Prawns of Norway.

The new solution has been developed in collaboration with Estiko Packaging Solutions.

It will be presented and launched during the Interpack event that will take place in Düsseldorf, Germany between 4 and 10 May.

The new pouch has been developed using a multi-layer film provided by Estiko Packaging, which uses circular certified random-polymer-grade of SABIC PP QRYSTAL.

This PP QRYSTAL has nearly 60% of ocean-bound plastic (OBP) content, which further contributes to the recovery and reuse of OBP.

SABIC Petrochemicals Engineering Thermoplastics & Market Solutions general manager Abdullah Al-Otaibi said: “Recovering OBP waste that could otherwise end up in our waterways or oceans is a complex challenge and requires close collaboration with dedicated value chain partners.

“We are proud to present yet another successful joint project that demonstrates a feasible solution to contribute to this global issue with a frozen foods packaging pouch that capitalises on the sustainable benefits of our TRUCIRCLE programme.

“With its high OBP content, this application helps all players reduce their carbon footprint and support the circularity of flexible packaging.”

OBP is abandoned or poorly managed post-consumer plastic waste, which is mainly found on riverbanks and in rivers up to 50km inland from seashores.

The manufacturing process of these new pouches involves the advanced recycling of this OBP to convert it into an alternative feedstock, which is then used by SABIC to manufacture certified circular polymers.

This polymer is used by Estiko Packaging Solutions to develop multi-layer flexible film for packaging pouches for frozen prawns at Coldwater Prawns of Norway.

Estiko Packaging Solutions research and development manager Taavi Tikk said: “In comprehensive trials on our existing film lines, we found that SABIC’s random PP material with OBP provided exactly the right drop-in-replacement to meet requirements of Coldwater Prawns of Norway, including excellent puncture and tear resistance as well as high transparency for the clear part of the pouch that lets consumers see the packaged prawns.”
