Pulp and paper producer Sappi is set to introduce a new paper-based packaging solution under its Sappi Guard range for the food sector.

The new sustainable solution is the first product jointly developed by Sappi and Felix Schoeller Group, as part of a collaboration agreement announced in January to develop barrier paper solutions for flexible packaging applications.

The 100g/m² paper composite features high-barrier properties with integrated barriers against water vapour, oxygen and grease.

Comprised of 80% renewable raw materials, the new solution also features improved sealing properties and has the ability to serve as an alternative to current plastic and aluminium packaging solutions.

"We are very proud that, despite the publication of our cooperation agreement only in January 2017, we are already in a position to announce a solution."

The new paper composite is expected to be unveiled at the upcoming Interpack 2017 event to be held next month in Germany.

Sappi Packaging and Speciality Papers business development head René Köhler said: “We are very proud that, despite the publication of our cooperation agreement only in January 2017, we are already in a position to announce a solution.

“The announcement followed the success of a longer cooperation between the two companies as developing packaging papers with integrated functionalities requires highly specialised expertise which needs to be successfully combined.”
