South African packaging and speciality paper manufacturer Sappi has entered a strategic partnership with Rovema, a packaging machine manufacturer based in Germany.

The collaboration will focus on providing packaging solutions that are both reliable and sustainable for customers.

In a statement, Sappi said that sustainable or environmentally friendly packaging is not just about the use of materials for packaging but involves collaboration between products, paper and machines.

The company said: “Since 2018, Sappi and Rovema have been collaborating as partners in the development of integrated packaging solutions as a complete package for forward-looking customers who wish to position themselves sustainably on the market.

“So far, these projects have yielded extremely positive results thanks to in-depth knowledge transfer between the paper manufacturer and the machine manufacturer.”

As part of the partnership, the companies will hold discussions about their cooperation in the field of functional paper packaging.

Sappi Europe paper and packaging solutions director René Köhler and Rovema chief executive Jens Torkel will be guests on Sappi’s recurring Blue Couch talk series.

The executives will discuss how companies can convert to paper-based solutions effectively and reliably.

Sappi is a provider of sustainable wood fibre products and solutions for printing papers, packaging and speciality papers, casting and release papers, biomaterials and bioenergy.

Both companies seek to deliver integrated packaging solutions as complete packages on the market.

Last year, the partners successfully completed a collaborative project for a cereal manufacturer.

The cereal manufacturer had switched its fully automated production to paper-based, sealable barrier pouches.

In July, Sappi announced its partnership with EcoVadis, a company that carries out third-party evaluations of business sustainability performance.

The two companies will evaluate the sustainability performance of Sappi’s suppliers through proactive ratings using EcoVadis’ methodology.

Last April, Sappi added a textured release paper line, Ultracast Viva, to its product portfolio.
