Sweden-based SCA Forest and Timber (SCA) and Vasa Brewery have launched an Arcwise tray resembling a hockey rink for 50cl beverage bottles.

Developed by SCA, Arcwise is a round corrugated packaging material.

A new wraparound packaging solution has also been developed with Arcwise to support existing filling machines.

Vasa Brewery CEO Niclas Nilsson said: "A great thing about Arcwise is that we can introduce a breakthrough packaging design and still use our existing erecting and filling machine, hence, no specific investment costs were needed.

"Furthermore, since the material can be manufactured on a conventional corrugated machine we see that sourcing is not an issue."

The Arcwise technology provides flexibility and enables graphic designs for curve shaped packaging, while maintaining rigidity.

"The technique opens up totally new possibilities for packaging designs that are attractive to customers and consumers."

Because of the strength of the curved shape, up to 30% of the material can be saved in Arcwise packaging.

While launching the technology in February, Arcwise business manager Rickard Hägglund said: "The technique opens up totally new possibilities for packaging designs that are attractive to customers and consumers.

"Surveys show that we generally prefer rounded shapes to angular ones. Round packaging is eye-catching and attracts consumer attention in the retail environment.

"We think both designers and brand owners will find these opportunities very interesting."

In March, SCA’s Arcwise business and VASA Brewery developed and launched pallet wraps for various beverages at Swedish retailers.
